Tutelar Idris Menhyr is a brutal and enigmatic man, waging a campaign to eliminate the other warlords of Tirgodh.  Tradition demands he stoke the fires of war, but he is driven by deeper motivations.

Ahn, trained as a chronicler from birth in Ashiir, and assigned by divine decree, has the delightful task of recording every last word the man mutters, every step he takes.

The Council of Kings sits apart from the blood shed in their name,  ever vigilant of their kingdoms as they teeter between stability and stagnation. When a piece becomes too successful, too aggressive,  sacred rites are invoked to manipulate the arena back into order.

When Idris receives demands from the Council of Kings, he foists the task upon his chronicler and puts the tedious matter to the back of his mind. Ahn forges ahead, lost in a duty she has little knowledge of, and Tutelar Menhyr discovers that even a burr, if left to fester, can prove toxic.
