Two novice Messengers are co-opted by the Archon of the Realm to help research the rightful heir after the former Ruler is murdered. Fighting suspicions about the Archon's motives, they cross the Kingdom for their investigation and inadvertantly get caught up in a race to find the murderer. Along the way they find their discontent for their Kingdom's values regarding the ancient Order of Messengers is not unique, and that they're not powerless to change that. May 8, 2016: new scene in Chapter 1, and the Apprentices' first meeting with Palit in Chapter 2 is considerably more detaile!
