1920. Hasmik and Armanoush (Arma) Karaboudjan are 17-year-old girls who live in Newark together with their father, a bricklayer, and mother, a seamstress. Refugees who have fled the Armenian-Turkish genocide, they are eager to assimilate into American life, but desperate to hold on to their past at the same time. When their cousin Shushan--a survivor of the genocide--arrives from Istanbul, she appears skittish and unobtrusive.
