I could feel his saliva dripping on my chin but I didn't dare stop kissing him. He roughly grabbed my chin and started to smack me because apparently I bit him. " Lisey why do we go through this shit everytime ? " Duke questioned. 

Preparing myself for the incoming hits, I was shocked to hear bullets ring through out the house so off impulse I screamed. Duke's eyes shot wide open as he slumped over and bled out on my overalls and white shirt. 

I poked him to see if he was alive and slowly crept under the table only to see my mother above him standing with a cigarette in one and a rifle in the other. " It's okay AnnaL , Mommy's gotchu and she's never going to let anyone do that to you again. " she cooed in my head. 

After that shit changed and I became mute, didn't speak to anybody nor did I smile. Even though Duke was a shitty step-uncle, he was the closet thing I had to my daddy Earl.
