New York City. 1927. A fast-paced world of glittering lights and alcohol drunk in hidden nooks of the booming city. There is a notorious bootlegging family, the Hughes, who have risen the social ladder of the city without delay. Although they have been successful, one in the business of sin does not live without an enemy. The Blackwells are a family who earn their keep by selling drinks, too...and this spurs a bitter rivalry that encourages bloody fights, fired guns and ongoing revenge. Alice and her siblings Arthur and Emma are the children of the Hughes, caught in between this horrible mess, wishing it would end. Alice reaps the benefits of living as a rich young woman in the hustling, bustling city by attending lavish parties and enjoying a dramatic life with her friends, but in her heart she yearns for something more real, something more important. Can the Hughes and Blackwells end their constant fighting? What will it take for the rivals to call it a night for good and how can Alice find the true happiness in life that she needs?
