Jess wanted nothing but her coffee and her book. She didn't want any realtionships, or friends, or family. Well, she might have wanted family but she didnt really have a choice in that department. In Jess's childhood, she saw things that a child should not see. Heard things a child should not hear. Felt things a child should not feel. You could say her childhood was tradgic. Disturbing. They would all be true. Because of the events that have happened, Jess can not love anymore. She doest feel love like everyone else.
