Everyone was the same. You wake up, change into the same outfit, and then go to school. Society made you all equal, so no person was different from another. If you were strange, you were diagnosed as a Different. For everyone was to wear the same things, act the same, and love the same. A normal person would fall in love after they were twenty to someone of the opposite gender. Marriages were considered a hassle, so you would not have a ceremony, just decide if you wanted to be married or not. Once married, there was no divorcing. For if you were not normal, you'd be coded. Normals wear white, Differents wear black.

That was also the day I realized something else. They were all around me in the crevices, places I wouldn't even think to expect of, people I hadn't realized were any different. Actors, dancers, musicians, presidents, and politicians. People I looked up to, people I looked down to. Just like me and just like Charley. They think and laugh and love, they're no different from anyone, they had their strengths and weaknesses. They are all abnormal, sure, but so is everything else and everyone else.

In the name of making everyone equal and to prevent what happened with our ancestors, we have created what will be known as the Founding Laws. 1. No markings or piercings are permitted. Every citizen will be issued the same clothing with the allowance of one fancy outfit. 2. Every family will have two children: one girl and one boy.
