There are many legends in the American west about awful creatures that live in the desert. Often called Skin-walkers, these things are the reason people disappear or go insane when stranded in the scorching sands. Of course Auriah had no idea about what was lurking in the hillside behind her house. She had always disregarded her mother's warnings and cautions, saying that the footprints she'd see on hikes were just big coyotes. One night hiking with a friend, she finally sees what all the legends are about. She wakes up in a strange place, and is forced to come to terms with the truth. There is a war between the animistic Skin-walkers and the humanized weres. Both change form, both live in the desert, but only one must kill humans to survive. When it turns out that a member of a werepack is Auriah's mate, things get interesting. She is the key player in this war, and the Alpha of this pack seeks to use her gifts for the benefit of him and his kin. But will she comply as her new alpha commands or listen to her new found nature?
