The reason he's a 'loner' is because people started to spread the word that he was gay. The person who did that, was Will Solace.
Will Solace used to be Nico's boyfriend but Will was forcing Nico to do things he didn't want to, so they broke up.
Will never said he dated Nico so nobody would know he was also gay.
Then there's Percy Jackson, also a junior. Percy is also gay, but he's a more confident person so nobody does anything to him.
Percy never knew how people treat Nico, and one day he stands up to for Nico.
And it all starts from there.
