Rio Pittman's twin sister dies in a tragic mixup between the two of them.

In between rumours as ugly as sin that ensue at her highschool, her longterm boyfriend also cheats on her during her lowest point. Life now feels like a series of unfortunate events, and she is left with no choice but to move to Riverside High to get away from the stifling atmosphere.

Heath Lancaster is a quiet and brooding person with a vacillating temperament. His friends and acquaintances fear that he has become as empty as a person can get after he lost his mother to suicide and is left with his controlling father who remarried not long after the incident.

Rio and Heath's paths keep crossing in the most unconventional of ways, and she is almost immediately drawn to his altruism and aloof nature and she begins to find it harder and harder to keep her feelings to herself. On the other hand, Heath would prefer to have nothing to do with the clumsy girl who seems to need babysitting to stay alive.

He doesn't know how correct he is about that last statement when Rio and her sister's mixup is threatening to come right.
