Seventeen-year-old Janey doesn't fit into her Mayan heritage - she's fair-skinned and blonde. Regrettably, escaping domestic struggles at home, her mother has brought Janey and her sister to San Ignacio, Belize, her grandparent's home town of Central America. Janey, along with her sister and a few of her cousins, is kidnapped from a community festival dance. She desperately scrambles to make sense of her terrifying situation. Her already muddled up world is thrown into sudden disarray. Between gradual revelations, the group of rugged kidnappers' rationale is finally revealed. The men have held the girls as ransom for the key to a secret, fortune-held hidden temple. From past expeditions, Janey's grandfather and other relations have discovered the key to the ancient temple. A member of the captors is partial to Janey's security, and she decides to trust the young handsome boy. As Janey and this boy, Jeff, grow closer, they uncover the mysterious truths of the unexplained Mayan legacy. Janey and Jeff unlock the temple entrance, only to be discovered by Chad and the other leaders. Chad commends Jeff for his clever infiltration, leaving Janey brokenhearted and betrayed. Janey is forced to enter the temple, compelled by the obligation of her sister being towed as leverage. Danger, booby traps, and a crumbling temple are beyond the threshold of the temple doors. They unearth gold and wealth, along with a recorded history of the forebears of the land. The discovered treasure reveals the harm in searching worldly treasures and, instead, ascertaining the true treasure of the heart. A fateful concluding snare of the temple yields the abrupt disintegration of the stone cavern. Thankfully, Jeff exposes his pure allegiance and rescues Janey and her sister from the murderous hands of his brother.
