On the same night Squin is awed and frightened by the appearance of a member of the legendary Darcaste, she returns home to find her entire family slaughtered. Taken from the carnage by the Regiment, the law force in the city of Hylaxi, and handed over to Scion Xiphos, she finds herself plunged into a life completely foreign to her, grief-stricken and alone.

Scion Xiphos' training is harsh and brutal, and Squin soon loses touch with her past life and the only true friend she has ever had, Mavin. When she comes of age, the head of the Scion, Anytos Ven Anaxian, finally loosens the tight reins he's held over her, and she soon discovers realities about the city and the Scion itself that she wishes had remained hidden. It doesn't take long for the Darcaste to learn of her survival, the one loose end that they couldn't find all those years before.
