Renato is on the run. Six thousand miles and three years still isn't enough. Bouncing from trade company to trade company, he struggles to keep his past behind him and his future within his grasp.
When the Victoria is caught in a storm in the East China Sea, Renato thinks his end has finally come. Through providence, luck, or sheer stubbornness, he finds himself washed upon unfamiliar shores, and soon learns that he is not a welcome guest.
Black ships loom, and civil war is on the horizon. Renato has to adapt quickly if he has any hope of surviving, but as a man so rooted in the past, the present has challenges he has never faced, and the tides of change engulf all in their path.
