Breathing is supposed to be the easiest thing on the earth, right? Well, not for Delaney Rain. She is a teenage girl living with lung cancer. For her, breathes are not natural. At any moment she could be on the floor coughing away. She joined the track team to raise endurance, but it doesn't turn out as planned. It becomes one big struggle of making the team and trying not to die. Literally.

This isn't a story about how the girl and the guy fall in love as the world crumbles around them. This story isn't about a weak girl who seeks out the help of a handsome stranger because she can't defend herself. If that's what you want, go find another softie to tell you it, 'cause this isn't what it's about. My name is Maia, and I am surviving the Haze one day at a time. I am a sixteen-year-old nomad who travels all over Texas, running from the Haze with my twin. It's been six months since the Haze began, and it's only getting worse. More and more people are being taken over by parasites that wish to destroy humanity. We don't know why, and we don't know what they are, or what they want. They're trying to destroy us, to get us to turn on one another. But I'm not going down without a fight.
