It's the story of an eternal friendship. There is no Melinda + Dorian. Instead Melinda is Dorian, and Dorian is Melinda.
Melinda and Dorian, two complete opposites in many ways, yet they are both struggling. You see, Melinda is dead but she is afraid of moving on so she doesn't enter the light. Dorian knows he is asexual and aromantic and doesn't understand himself. While she has no family left, Dorian's is falling apart because of him and his disconnected parents fear for him.
This story is told so that Melinda could help Dorian and vice versa.
