Welcome to Dream Wood Institute: a home for young adults in need of psychiatric help. The patients are all in the 'mental home' for different reasons and come from very different backgrounds.
Seemingly normal, yet depressed, Star 'smiler' Jones, joins Dream Wood for the first time at the age of fifteen. She is forced to share a room with the ball of crazy that is Rain Bow who had belonged to the home for ten years.
Boys, friends, drugs, sex, arguments, knives, rope and beds all get in the way of the unorthodox friendship blossoming between the unlikely friends. Will Rain finally find the courage to accept help? Or will she just drag Star down the same path she's on?
*WARNING* This story contains sexual references, swearing, alcohol, drugs, self-harm and suicide.
Don't read it if you're expecting all of the characters to make a magical recovery at the end of the book. This is a story about a mental home, not fairy land, it will not be full of love and happy endings.
I stare at Matt's face as he looks down, concentrating on the game. I can tell he's so angry. He's holding it in his jaw, he's clenching his teeth. He's up in his head and I don't know what's going on up there but I just know it's not good. Even if I get him back out now, I know that he's going to overthink everything later tonight.
"Matty, it's ok." I whisper.
He immediately looks up and finds my eyes. His blue eyes are bluer than normal. Impossibly blue. Not even a gray blue. But a pure, brilliant blue.
"It's not ok, Rach. I fucking hate him."
His swear catches me off guard a bit. But my eye contact doesn't waver.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
My favorite color immediately changes to blue.
