Gauis needed herbs that were only found in certain places of the Five Kingdoms, usually he got them imported but this year, some hadn't been ordered and others were dead or missing. So, after making sure with Arthur, the physician sends Merlin on a trip around the Five Kingdoms to gather the needed herbs. This was suppose to be a solo quest, one year at most, but whenever Gwaine follows the servant out, their friendships becomes even stronger than before and Merlin finds it easy to tell someone for a change. After all, Strength is Magic's protector. Follow these two through the Five Kingdoms, across mountains and valleys, tombs and camps, and seem to forget about the main purpose of the journey.
