My heart is pounding, my head is racing, my legs are shaking, and yet I continued to run.

The winds glided me to whatever direction, to be far, far, far away from where I am now.

The trees rustled as I quickly rushed pass.

I then stopped to take a breath as the twigs cracked underneath my feet.

"I will find you," mumbled a voice in the woods as I turned back.

 I continued running.

I need to get away from here.

Fast.

But before I knew what happened...

 I fell down.

Looking To Belong (A Runt's Story) by CrystalScherer
56 parts Complete
A wholesome love-at-first sight werewolf story where the mate isn't an Alpha, and they actually want to be together. Life as a rogue isn't easy, especially for a runt living in No Man's Land. Jade has gained an impressive set of skills over the years, such as evading ferals, camouflaging her scent, and sniffing out expensive truffles, but few packs want to accept a runt. When she finally gets invited into a pack, she picks up an irresistible scent. Her soulmate. Jade must decide if she's willing to grasp what is likely her only chance at unconditional love - or flee in case her potential mate rejects her and shatters her heart forever. ---- Excerpt: My steps faltered as I noticed that two of the pursuing wolves had sped ahead and were waiting to intercept me. I launched toward a tree and ricocheted off at a ninety-degree angle without slowing down. One of the wolves behind quickly followed and began closing in. I started to panic, looking around frantically for a way to escape. I saw a rabbit burrow under a small bramble bush and desperately raced towards it. I darted under the edge of the plant and heard the tan wolf go around as he expected me to come out the other side. It gave me the precious seconds I needed to squeeze down the tunnel. My relief was short-lived - the rabbit that dug this burrow had not survived long enough to finish it. The tunnel was only about twice as long as the average human arm, and I could clearly see the entrance. I sent a silent prayer that the bramble bush would deter them and that they would not realize just how shallow this burrow was. I waited anxiously. Forest eyes by Unicorns4lifealways

I locked eyes with it. Its amber gaze pierced through me, like it could smell my fear. There was something ancient in that gaze, something that stirred an unsettling feeling deep in my gut, a sensation I couldn't quite shake. Its claws scraped against the earth, long and curved, leaving deep marks in the fresh dirt as it moved closer. I could hear its paws thud against the ground, massive and deliberate, each step sending another shock of terror through me. The silence that followed was unnerving, heavy in the air, but then a loud crack shattered the stillness. It came from the forest-close, too close. The beast whipped its head back to the forest, quickly turning his whole body around so I was behind him. The shock from him turning so fast made me stumble a few feet backwards. The ground beneath us seemed to shift as it suddenly lunged forward, its muscles rippling with terrifying power. With one mighty leap, it vaulted over the rotting wooden fence, clearing the barrier effortlessly. The impact of its landing shook the earth beneath my feet. I staggered again, trying to keep my balance as I watched the creature, now free, pause on the other side of the fence. It cocked its head backwards meeting my gaze one final time. Then, without another notice, it darted into the forest, disappearing into the darkness like a shadow swallowed by night. I stood there, my body still trembling, staring at the empty space where the creature had been. The night had swallowed it whole. And though the sounds of the forest returned, soft and distant, the terror of that moment lingered. Was it still out there? Watching? Waiting? My eyes darted back and forth in the forest, trying to see it still hung around. I didn't know, but I couldn't shake the feeling that this encounter, this creature, was only the beginning.
