Carmen was a mystery. She wasn't those girls that completely opened up or that completely hid themselves. She always expressed herself in her own way. She wore this red lipstick that went with her red curly hair and her eyes were this dark brown that seemed so full and thick but were so deep. She didn't care about anything or anyone. She often dated guys but always broke their hearts with no care. No one knew why she seemed fit in so perfectly but seemed galaxies away. Until one night, someone knew. Me.

I wrote this story for a short story contest at my school but I got like 4th place in the district because it sucks. But this is my first piece of writing in which I really tried because there was a word limit. However, I am not limiting myself in this one so please enjoy.

A Secret Voice
25 year old Monica never had much luck with relationships since she was a young teenager. She had gone on many dates, played around with guys, however it would never last more than just a few months. There was one guy who she had dated for a year, thinking he could be the one, however it never worked out. Freshly graduated from college, Monica starts an internship at a magazine company. A few of her coworkers found her to be quite attractive, with her natural beauty and caring personality. Some of them even try to pursue her, however she lost hope. What is the point of going on dates if they wont last, was her thought about it. A few months in, however, notes start to show up on her desk. Little secret messages. Monica thought it sweet, even starting to write back to this anonymous writer. The hope she had once lost is slowly growing back. Could Monica have finally found the one? Mature, fifteen year old Carmen receives an unexpected surprise when she finds out her close friend - tall, grey-eyed, Josh - likes her. Despite the surprise, she can't deny the chemistry between them and so both teens agree to pursue more outside of their friendhsip. As things start off sweet, they turn a little sour as Carmen deals with the fact that Joshua has lots of unresolved emotional issues caused from a painful past. Meanwhile, Carmen is quite the opposite and deals with trust and committment issues. Carmen wants to be there for Josh and help him, but she doesn't know how when she can't even figure herself out. I sighed inwardly. "No. It's just, I think-" I searched for my words. "I think we're better off where we started. As two people who like each other and vibe well, but without a title to complicate things." I couldn't figure out whether I was just saying this as an excuse not to be with him. My mind was jumbled.
