He's watched her their whole lives. She sparkled in a way he's never seen another. She brought color to his otherwise damp, darkened sights. Brought minutes of joy to his world of misery he'd planted himself in. And he feared he'd taint her. 

So he makes himself look bad - alcohol, the occasional drug binge, having sex with anyone who looks his way, picking fights with anyone she mention's she's interested in. Anything to push her away. Anything so he wouldn't dampen that sparkle of her's... But she's not left him, declares she doesn't care what he does so long as he doesn't kill himself - "You're the one person I'd never leave, Stark Arlis. I promise you that." 

Oh, how he wishes she would.
