It was concern for little Lindy that had made Claire accept the post of nanny to the child, for she was seriously worried about the harsh treatment Lindy seemed to be getting from her uncle and guardian, Simon Condliffe. But it was before Claire began to change her mind about Simon --- in more ways that one. She could see that it was lack of communication rather than the lack of feeling that made him seem so stem with Lindy; that underneath he was really very different --- a man, in fact, with whom it would be easy to fall in love. but all of his was not lost on Ursula Corwell, Simon's old friend who expected to be Simon's wife, and she lost no time in making things as difficult as possible for the girl she considered as her rival.

She had so much faith in him. He was supposed to be a protector, a friend, a shoulder to cry on, the leader of their gang. But, ever since they had grown up and moved away from each other, he hadn't bothered to answer or return calls or letters. She had waited, but the waiting was over because in four days they were going to meet again. Would he still be the same? How could he though? He had never once offered to get in contact with her. But their meeting is going to be something only seen once in a lifetime.
