Ensign Marie Stanton has been assigned to the crew of the Federation starship Enterprise, commanded by her childhood best friend, Captain James. T. Kirk. Though the two have known each other their entire lives, they grew apart while at Starfleet Academy. Now that they have both graduated and work together, Kirk's romantic feelings for Marie have begun to resurface. She is in the process of questioning whether her relationship with her Captain would ever be a possibility when a mysterious alien named Khan is added to the picture. Marie and Kirk must carry out a mission they had never imagined, with help from their newfound friends Uhura, Spock, Chekov, Scotty, and Bones.
