Because one night, the night that Jezebel was born to be exact, the young Mr. Davidson took off without a trace, leaving his wife husbandless and his daughter fatherless. Many common folk say that he went back to the sea, took up piracy, "for the sea," they told one another, "runs in the family's veins."

It isn't until Jezebel's seventeenth birthday that she believes her father will repay his debt and come back home. But when the outlandishly extravagant ship that she hopes her father is on, unloads it's cargo and the crew walks off that she realizes that maybe her father never left for the sea.
