"With the souls twirling between her fingers, leaving stardust in their wake, she let go. They danced among one another, forming into starry creatures that created a sky full of dreams and wonders. They danced until one day the shadows began to stain the star-flecked streaks across the sky, and she sent each star-filled creature into the earth, where they would stay dormant until a connection was formed with the living -a connection that would certainly be able to open the doors to the starry path she treaded on once more... "

Spirilani Island has been said to have always been surrounded by an endless ocean. To the islanders, they are the only humans in existence. The twins, Kailani and Sage Noe, are members of one of the four tribes of the island: the Nio tribe which dominates the night. The Dao tribes dominates the day, the Sunao tribe dominates the sunrise, and the Sunula tribe dominates the sunset.
Spirilani, the creator they worship, gifts every islander that passes the trials at age ten a special friend: a destined spirit animal.
With these spirits, the islanders participate in the deathly Spirit Games every five years for those that wish to enter Spirilani's kingdom.
However, the islanders only know that the winners simply disappear without a trace.

Kailani and her twin brother choose to face the deathly games with their starry creatures to obtain a personal goal --finding their father and eldest brother. However, with the meeting of a peculiar male, Kailani finds herself faced with impossible truths that threaten to turn their world upside down and change the fates of both their starry creatures and their own forever.
