People who are born with extra abilities such as mind control, flying, super speed, super strength, among other things, usually find out they are different at a young age. These kids are sent to a special school, a school that teaches them how to blend with humans and hide their power. This was not the case for 16 year old Todd Kinten. Todd is a late bloomer, his powers didn't surface until his sixteenth year and it flips his life upside down.

 Now he has to move away from his mom, and deal with a whole new world all on his own.

All that while you have to fight monsters that come from another dimension, of which the portal is just barely a mile away in the forest behind your house. And your crush being capable of exploding the universe with a snap of his finger, if he gets his full powers. Seems like your life is very simple, Andreas. Or is it?

Going Your Own Way, but with Magic by slightlyonfirewhoops

Being 16 sucks. Being 16 and running away after you burn down a library with flames you shoot from your hands, trying to carve out a place in the world for yourself while understanding this strange curse double sucks. Getting interrupted from figuring out magic completely on your own by an evil witch with plans to take over the world by doing *extremely* gross things to dead bodies triple sucks. Add in a pet mouse, a hot boy who shows up halfway through and amounts of emotional suppression never before known to mankind and you get a rough approximation of Max's life.

Disclaimer: this book is lgbtq friendly, and has more than one love interest. there is no love triangle, but there is a poly romance vibe. it is teen fiction, so it does not get explicit.
