The inspiration for this poem came from a traditional English language nursery rhyme, 'As I was going to St. Ives,' written in the form of a riddle, the earliest version of which dates back to a manuscript published around 1730.
However, we do have a Ft. St. James in British Columbia that was established back in the days of fur trading. It has a very interesting history and is a very popular tourist attraction during the summer season.
