Maura Rizzoli is the youngest child in her family. Her father is a repair man and her mother works for the police bureau in their café. her elder sister Ann Rizzoli, who is also the first child, is a detective for the Boston Police Bureau. The second child that was born and is the eldest son is Charles 'Charlie' Rizzoli and he is a Cop for the same Bureau as his elder sister. The third in their family is the second son and he is the screw up of the family. His name is Anthony 'Tony" Rizzoli. Then there is their younger sister that is in her final semester in college to become a forensic scientist for the Police to help on Murder cases and other things.

Her sister is close friends with the coroner who just happens to be named Maura also. Maura Livingston is the fore runner in the invention of new ways to help find the time of death and to help solve murders.

She went to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She then gets hired right out of school by the state to work for them in New York City.
