Perhaps the best of tales are the ones that might have been.

The ones that delve into the depths of lore and grasp something unexpected, something that should've remained hidden for all time.

Perhaps the tales left unexplored are the ones that need to be told the most.

"I'm enchanted! I don't think I have read another story quite like this that is this authentically elvish... It is a true treasure on here!" ~Aiwren

"I'm enjoying this! Your style is very fitting. Well done!" ~ EpicRedpenn

"Wonderfully penned. I cannot express how much I love your work, it's like reading an undiscovered chapter of Tolkien, even. I can't wait for more!" ~Dreamescape07

"Indeed, most tales of Middle Earth do not come from an Elf's eyes. Yes, they do see all, and that is the pity of it. If you look into an elf's eyes, you will see Time itself. Pools of memory, lakes of sorrow and springs of joy. The elves are where sorrow and joy meet. Perhaps that is why they are so intriguing. " - Susanna Chattaway

Light and Shadows (Thranduil's story post BOTFA) by Cineva999
53 parts Complete Mature
The Elvenking is like a very strong, old tree, deeply rooted in the kingdom he pledged himself to protect. He also pledged himself to protect his heart from love, out of fear that it might weaken him, but that proved to be disastrous. Love...what daunting word rubbed in his face by that fearless redhead elleth during the battle in Dale. Is there any love left in him? Follows what happens with Thranduil and Tauriel after BOTFA, during the War of the Ring and further into the 4th Age. Mainly from Thranduil's POV and including canon events that are only briefly mentioned in the books. I try to respect the lore as much as I can. Feedback and comments are much appreciated :) "His words were unforgiving again, hiding under the same cold tone he had for centuries, yet he could not believe them himself anymore. Tauriel was looking at him, her gaze seemingly piercing through his soul. His dream to restore Mirkwood to Greenwood and his thoughts of avenging his beloved wife were contradicting everything he said. He did not want to care yet every fibre of his being cared too much." "There was something else that Thranduil noticed in Celeborn's eyes: a combination of respect and admiration. 'You are strong, Thranduil. You are like one of the old Mirkwood trees, deeply rooted in the earth, that the centuries cannot wither. I always thought that, no matter what evil lies upon Arda, you will endure.' The Mermaid's Forgotten Love (Legolas love story) by kyxgarra21
21 parts Complete
Artemis that's my name. A Long long time ago a young elf prince gave it to me. He was the crowned elf prince of Mirkwood. His name Legolas he was a very kind young elf. I had saved him from drowning when he was only 10, well looked 10 anyway. Since he is an elf they age very slowly just like my kind. After I saved his life that day he wouldd often come see me. Each day just to learn about me and my race. Since we'll, im a mermaid. I'm the last of my kind. He and I grew up together and my feelings for him became one of love over time. I loved him but it was dangerous for me because mermaids can only love once. If my heart breaks it will turn to stone and stop beating, it will grow old and cold and it will stop and never start again. My body will live but it would be a shell of a mer. One day Legolas had come to see me by the river, he told me about a young she-elf named Tauriel. He told me about how he had feelings for her and how amazing she was. My heart hurt at those words. He had fallen for another. That day I told him I loved him and that I would never forget him. Then I grabbed his face with my hands and kissed him. When I kissed him a tear slid down my cheek, when it hit the ground it turned into a white pearl. I kissed him because I loved him but when I kissed him I took away every memory of him and myself. I let go and put my necklace around his neck. It was a green stone with markings on it. We called it our hearts we would give it to the ones we love. I looked at him one last time before jumping back into the water leaving the one I love.

When a darkness spreads across Mirkwood, a mighty elven kingdom is robbed from its bliss. A once vibrant people hides behind the walls of their kingdom and the forest grew into a bleak and uneasy place. The other realms suspected Thranduil of being embittered by Saurons return, the growing darkening of his kingdom and the domination of Shelob's children beneath the canopy of his forest. Nothing could've been further from the truth. There was another reason why Thranduil grew bitter and isolated. A reason no one dared to speak about. And as people stopped talking about it, memories faded, got twisted and turned, until dozens of versions left people confused. They had forgotten Thranduils love for life, for his kingdom. The memories fell into extinction and people no longer remembered. Except for Thranduil. This is the story of Thranduil and the memories he hid in the depths of his soul. A pain that has wrenched his heart. A pain that can best be described as; 'agony.'
