Emilia is twelve years old when her family get into a car wreck, Emilia is the only survivor of her family as her family had moved to New York from England Emilia has to go live in an orphanage in which she is treated terribly. Emilia gains the courage to leave the orphanage and becomes a target on the street. An older teenage male gets too aggressive with Emilia in the back alley of a restaurant that Jennifer Lawrence is leaving. Jennifer see's the incident and rushes to Emilia's aid. After threatening to call the police on Emilia, she persuades her to tell her the whole story. 
Jennifer can't help but want to protect Emilia and agree's to adopted her as long as she's not expecting a mother. Jennifer doesn't want that title she isn't ready to be a mother yet. 
However being the agreed parental guardian of a traumatized teenager does not come easy.
