The Romans equated Apollo, God of healing, light, science, the arts, and freedom, with the Gaulish/Celtic Belenos, a God of healing, light snd solar power, with whom the festival of Beltane and the Beltane fires are associated.  Beltane is celebrated on the first of May.  The birthday of Apollo also happens to fall during the month of May.
