Elsabeth is a young thirteen year old girl adopted by the Ackerman's who live in a poor farming town. In 1898, where dark skinned peoples are still considered less than human it's a wonder that anyone adopted her at all with her Native and ex-slave blood running through her veins. It's no paradise though. Not with her sister taking any chance she can to cause trouble and her mother who would beat her just because she's "bored". Elsabeth swears she can take this, it could be worse after all, but when the mysterious farm cat begins to speak to her she realizes that she's much more powerful than anyone would have guessed.
