Elena is Tatia Petrova's sister and has always been close to the Mikaelson family so when turned she was made an original also. She has always had a connection to Kol but after slaughtering a village in her rage, once she found out about her family's deaths, tries to calm her. 
Her heightened emotions and need for distraction leads to the two having sex. Elena after such regrets doing so and rejects Kol's love. This gives Kol motivation to kill to release his pent up anger. Elena confronts him when it puts him, his family, and herself in harms way with Mikael on their trail.
