Sarabeth Johnson is 16. She has known loss and despair like no 16 year old should have to. Why did her dad have to leave when she was 11? Why did her mom have to die? Why did her stepdad have to drink and abuse her and her sisters? Why does her big sister have to be hooked on cocaine? Why does she have to have a little 12 year old sister to care for? Her life seems to be constructed of questions. But then some questions arise that Sarabeth cannot answer. Should she turn her stepfather in to the authorities and risk being put in a foster home and separated form her little sister, Charlotte, the only living person she is sure she loves, should she run away, as her older sister, Beth suggests and chance her fragile younger sister's life or or continue to live the hell she has known since her mom died?
