Emma Clarke's father has been gone for a month. She doesn't know anything about the whole affair, just two facts:
1. He left on a train.
2. Nobody seems to be doing anything to solve her mystery.
Every day at sunset, she waits at the station for the evening stop, and searches the crowd for her father, if he comes back at all.
But someone new to the town of Eldridge has arrived, and Emma learns that their ties go deeper than she'd ever have imagined...

It's a move they'll come to regret if she has any say in the matter. Nothing humiliates posh folk like having a daughter sent home from the country's most esteemed educational institution. Just flunking class isn't dramatic enough, though. Des plans to get booted in the most spectacular manner possible, just to make sure her parents' social circle will never let them live it down. Her scheming, unfortunately, encounters three roadblocks within the first week of class. The first: Exie Quinnell, teacher's pet, whip-smart, and unreasonably attractive. Neither girl intended to end up on a project together, but their teacher deemed Des in need of a little... remediation. The second: There are things about Melliford Academy that none of the teachers will talk about, even when pressed. Things that should be easy answers. Sheila, was falling, she didn't know why, or how, but when she finally hit the ground, she didn't know who she was , where she was from, or why she was in this place. But there were people there, they told her who she was, and how she got here. But she was still confused. Then she met Kendra, she seemed to know all about this place, apparently this is the edge, and about every two months or so, a new boy or girl is delivered into the edge. But Sheila feels that something is wrong, that the edge isn't as safe as people tell her. She starts having nightmares, her close friends start turning against her, and she just wants to be safe again, she wants to get out of the edge. Will Sheila make it out of the edge?
