The world is full of hatred and mistreatment of Casters, teenagers who have obtained strange and powerful abilities gifted to them by an unknown force delivered by the Comet. They are indistinguishable from others until the age of twelve, at which point they develop an ability to control some sort of aspect of nature. These people are seen as subhuman, and are feared to the point of resentment. In the city of Terminus, the relations between Casters and the general populace are even worse, and the peace is threatened by the eternal tension. A group of students at Stormcoast Academy must deal with their own problems, as well as violence between the people, while trying to remain alive in a strange society.
