Klaus Kinser, conducting the West Midlands Philharmonic, falls headlong into the orchestra pit, very dead. What looks like a heart attack isn't - his body has surprisingly stopped producing proteins, and pathologist Jane Keller is hard pressed to identify the source of the problem. More musicians die, without apparent motive. Powerful detective work finally leads to an electrifying and surprising climax, where even the experienced DCI Dyce is appalled by the final ironic twist.
