"Why didn't you fight them?" I asked her, not believing she just stood there doing nothing, the girl I knew was so daring that she did not need saving from these men, she would have fought them by herself.

I gently held her arm and she flinched, "I'm sorry to trouble you. But thank you for saving my life." She said, her was voice low and her body shook slightly. "Hey calm down, you didn't cause me any trouble. And look at you now, if it were me touching you, you would've already punched me square in the jaw. Not so tough now?" I teased her a little to calm her down, but she just looked at me in surprise.

Her green eyes were lifeless but fear was evident on her face. Her hands were balled into fists by her sides. "Aubrey, you don't look yourself. I don't believe it why are you..." I stopped talking, seeing the panic in her eyes which appeared the moment I started speaking again. Then realization finally sank in my head and I stopped her by grabbing her arm before she could run away.

"Rose?" I said observing her closely. She didn't deny it.

"Once upon a time there was a dragon that only knew one love, a phoenix." She laughs at me again. "The phoenix was kind, full of compassion. She could see the corruption in the world knowing that eventually the dark would consume the light. The dragon was her natural opposite, ferocious and vengeful. She was his light, but the world needed her. A chief came to the phoenix worried his people would be killed by the evil in people's hearts. He begged the phoenix for help, but because of her innocents in being a phoenix she could not help in her current form without being corrupt herself. So, she did the unthinkable. She abandoned her only love to bond with the chief's unborn daughter. Giving the village a change to preserve goodness, for not just themselves but for the rest of eternity. But the phoenix would not be strong until the human that possesses it was. The phoenix was killed before reaching her full potential, but the phoenix was born again. A man that had fallen in love with the girl sought out the phoenix's lost love knowing he was the only one on the earth that could morn the innocence the world had lost. The beast grew fond of the man and struck a bargain that if the man would accept the dragon, the dragon would infuse himself with man giving him the power to save the phoenix. The man being human would eventually grow old and perish, so the man agreed that not just him but the bloodlines to follow would become vessels for the dragon to preserve itself eternally to save that which he loves. The bloodlines were separated through the ages leaving the phoenix helpless and the dragon bitter. Then one day, a green haired city kid that was yet to find his dragon found his phoenix in English class and stole her first kiss."

She looks up at me, taking a step forward and smiling slightly, "How can I ever get hurt when I have you here to protect me?" "But you could have gotten hurt," I murmur softly, hanging my head and feeling my shoulders drop, the tension seeping from my body. "No. Stop," She cuts me off sternly but tenderly, "Don't talk like that, Reece. I'm okay, you're okay, we're okay," She speaks softly, reaching her hand up to gently brush her thumb over my cheek, just under the cut that's there. "We're okay," I repeat, taking a small step closer to her. She nods with a small smile, moving her hand down from my cheek and instead placing the palm of her hand on my chest, right over my heart. I know she can feel how fast my heart is beating. I just don't know why it's doing that. ~ Reece Carter is the bad boy of Northwood High. He smokes and he fights.
