James Holden has had a pretty bad life. Having alcoholics for parents, with them not caring about anything he did except for if he had got in trouble at school and they had to come and get him. Never once did he have a good parent. School? People bullied him. Home? His parents neglected and punished him. He is filled with so much pain the only way he could think to handle it was to punish himself more. Each day some new cuts were made. Never thinking he will ever have happiness. He never thought he would live past his teenage years.
Sam Hems is the opposite. He always has a smile on. Joining school groups. Nice to everyone he meets. Straight A student. A loving mom and a caring dad with a little sister. Whenever somebody was around Sam they could not help it to just be in a good mood. His family moves to a new town and he is enrolled in the local high school. He is the person who will stick up for someone they don't know, and that's exactly what he did.
He stood up for James. They became close. People still tried to pick on James but Sam would always stand up for him. As time went by the two grew closer.
