The Earth is dying. Most of the planet is now made up of sand, and water is running out faster than anyone anticipated.
The second largest city left, known as Herriem, is home to all different kinds of people.
Sage Grigori had her entire life planned out for her the moment she joined the Guard. Being the youngest member -- at only eighteen years old -- people expected great things from her. What they didn't expect was for her to pull a gun on a fellow officer, committing treason in the process.
Sisters Nyla and Aisley Graves have gone through life supporting each other in any way they can. So when Aisley suddenly disappears and word gets out that she has broken the Ultimate Law by leaving their walled community, Nyla has no choice but to go after her.
All three girls have nothing in common. That is, until they all end up outside the city searching for something they didn't know they were missing.
The only question is: Will the desert ever end?

For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on. She is one of the first to figure out that the grid will eventually fail, because of the vein of fossil fuel instability, trying to raise the alarm. When the grid does fail, she doesn't even get the satisfaction to say 'I told you so' before she is forced to collaborate in the TROIKA - a trio of biologist, engineer, and geophysicist that must find an immediate and then long-term solution to power the earth. Oh, and she has no choice. USSR, a cynic planner and injured war veteran, has questions. Torn between his eastern roots and western intelligence, he struggles to fit in, curb his aggression, and deal with personal loss. Instead of notifying the world of the impending grid failure, he builds a vast arsenal nuclear plants to power his land against the rules, and when the grid falls, his lights and machines keep running. When finally his arrest occurs, he finds himself in a unique situation, offered a position in the TROIKA - but if he declines, then a life of darkness behind bars awaits him. The goal of the TROIKA is simple: Be quick, be correct, be ready. It doesn't take long for USSR and America to loathe each other on principle, each with their own goals and ideals, clashing on everything from fashion to economics. Can they push away their pride and save the world, maybe even themselves? Or will their bitterness engulf everyone in thick, oily darkness forever? A single choice will ultimately decide their fate.
