This is a story about a young woman who faces challenges with her family, and feels like she has nowhere to go when faced with adversity. She leans on her therapist, a stuck up doctor who thinks her Harvard degree means she knows what Jamie is going through, but grows to love the tenacious girl who walked into her office.  It also delves into the life of a young man who despite his very retro upbringing learns to accept the differences between himself and Jamie and adores her with every fiber of his being.

Later that day as the sun started to set and the moon came out I scurried over to the place I had been calling home for the past month. "Hi Sally. How have you been?" I greeted the security guard that was on duty tonight. The women's shelter downtown had been giving me a small cot to sleep on for a while now. "Not so good darling." She had an adorable southern accents that normally made me feel safe, but tonight her tone seemed worried. "What's going on that has you worried?" She gave me a serious look. "There's a woman in there named Serena, says she's your mother, and that she's taking you home."
