Danielle is a strong-willed, confident, young mother. She has just given birth to her first child, Ema-Lyn Janice Wilson. Her ex-boyfriend, Brad, Ema's father, refuses to acknowledge that he truly is her father. Pointing his finger at her friend Drew, he wants nothing to do with any of them. Danielle still takes Ema to see her father's family every Sunday, even though most of them don't believe she's telling the truth. Her parents died in a drunk driving accident when she was about 3 months pregnant, which led to her taking in her 16 year-old sister, Kimi. With only her younger sister, Kimi, her best friend, Collin, her romantic interest, Robert, her new born daughter, Ema-Lyn, and Brad's parents, Doug and Anita, to turn to for help, Danielle tries to survive with out breaking down.

Fifteen year-old, somewhat tomboy Danielle Rivers is desperate for a job. Having just moved to New York from a small town in Kansas, it's a completely different ball game. Requirements for jobs constantly get in the way of Danielle being hired, most of them age requirements. When Danielle's sister Linda comes home one day with a mysterious pink flyer, Danielle can't help but wonder what's on it. When she gets her hands on the paper, she notices what's written across the top in swirly, gold letters: Miss Junior New York Beauty Pageant. When Danielle gets to the place she'll be preparing for the pageant, she has to deal with an evil mentor, vicious competition, and one boy who won't seem to leave her alone.
