After you finish the game you can still live your life inside the game for the npc's have a mind of their own, and can be talked to like normal people. You can leave the game at any given point and still have the choice to start at the same point you logged out at even if it's past the point you finished the game. All the npc's are aware that they are in a game though don't think anything of it since it's simply just like another universe. You can change the outcome of any game if you can change the mind of a certain character. The games fate is in your hands. Either stick to the script or mix it up.
