Skylar is dead and has almost no recollection of a time before his death. We begin in the small seaside town of silvis where, as far as Skylar is concerned, demons and ghosts run amok (despite the fact that to the rest of the world this town is simply mundane). He has practically no memory of his life before death and can only gather information from the necromancer, a strange man with matted silver hair, clad in a long ripped cloak covered with jewels and gems of all descriptions. With help from the necromancer Skylar is able to obtain information about the world he now has to live in but, could learning the secrets of this corrupted realm, leave him in a state even worse than dead?

Alyssa has forgotten her brush with Death, but David's words have stayed with her: prepare. For what? She doesn't know. For a year, she's trained and become an almost undefeated boxer, putting all of her grief for the boy she loved and lost into being the best fighter. She's fast, strong, fearless. Now strange things have started happening, and she thinks she's losing her mind. How is she supposed to fight against what she can't see? Her mother's mind is clouded with a darkness no medicine can fix, and an ancient shadow circles the town, and Alyssa knows it's somehow related to her. Gifted in ways she doesn't understand, she's thrust into a triangle of devotion and danger-an angelic protector who refuses to leave her alone, a boy whose hands have held hers through the nights, and a darkness that wants only to make her surrender. In a race that runs as fast as her fists, Alyssa must choose who to trust and how much of herself to give-because the only way to stop a thing that feeds on light may be to become what it fears most. Will she save her mother and keep her humanity, or the secrets hasn't discovered cost her everything?
