"She was a running waterfall, untouched by man. I was simply asleep until she came along."

22-year-old Cody lives in his own world, separate from reality. His constantly running mind occupies him with thoughts to get him through each day, which is especially hard with only an arm and a half. After a devastating departure from his now ex-girlfriend, he struggles to find comfort in his only remaining companionship; his cat, Scout. Cody lives alone, blind to what the world surrounding him has to offer, in an endless cycle of daily routine after daily routine. Until one day his cycle is interrupted by a passing shadow, and his eyes are forced open; allowing him to see all that he's let pass him by.

Cody Williams can't speak. After a freak accident, he has been rendered mute and has been living with the terrors of that day locked away in his head. One September morning Cody falls through the seat of his school bus and wakes up in the waiting room of Bright Side Mental Asylum, and it's full of people that don't look quite human. Strangely, he doesn't remember quite how he managed to get there. Cody befriends two odd people while at Bright Side: Hazel and Hugo. Hazel is a brave and rebellious teenage girl, and Hugo is an odd easily spooked preteen boy. As time passes, Cody and his friends slowly learn the truth about his past through dark means and horrid realizations, along with discovering terrible secrets of the Asylum they were held in. Memories come to light, and there's only one thing the three will find in the end: The truth.
