At the tender age of 6 years old, innocent Lawrence Miller was snatched away from his home in northern Missouri, where African Americans and free from slavery. He is then sold into slavery and works several years at a plantation. At a loss for money, his master takes him and another spiteful slave, John, towards California to strike it rich with gold. The journey to California is dangerous, and all doesn't end well. After being jumped on the trip there, something turns around Lawrence's life, for better, or worse.
