A historical fiction short story by C. J. Thrush, author of the un-published novel, Lady Blade.
In Tuscany during the 1700’s a girl had to know her place or there were consequences.
Try telling that to Francesca DiCesare, the eleven-year-old daughter of Maestro DiCesare, Europe’s most renowned fencing master. Francesca has more courage than common sense, and learns her lesson - just not the one they were trying to teach her.
Set amid the blushing poppies in the Tuscan countryside, this is the first in a series of coming of age stories.
Francesca DiCesare is the title character in the as-yet-unpublished novel LADY BLADE which begins when Francesca is eighteen. Lady Blade was a finalist in the San Francisco Writer’s Conference Contest and a quarter-finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Competition.

Detonated Dreams
In a dystopian world where women are scarce and power is absolute, 13-year-old Talia Reyes dreams of escaping the oppressive grip of The Dominion-a ruthless regime that abducts women and girls like prized possessions. With a deadly virus rendering most females infertile or dead, The Dominion, heirs to the old government, claim dominance over the few who remain. Talia hopes to be spared-until a brutal raid takes someone she loves. Determined to fight back, Talia poses as an 18-year-old to join the Free Blades, a rogue band of mercenaries. Under the harsh mentorship of Dmitri "Blastnik" Volkov, a scarred and mysterious war veteran, she hones her combat skills. But as their bond grows, so do the lines between mentor and something more-forcing Talia to grapple with her own vulnerability. When The Dominion strikes again, Talia is thrust into a perilous rescue mission where courage, sacrifice, and self-discovery collide. In this high-stakes battle for freedom, she must confront her deepest fears-and decide if she has the strength to become a hero, or if the weight of loss will break her. Can Talia rise from the ashes of her shattered world, or will The Dominion crush her spirit? [Very „The Handmaid's Tale inspired", but more post-apocalyptic]

Yet, in the midst of this peril, there's a quiet strength, a glimmer of innocence that refuses to be extinguished. She may be small, but they aren't the only ones with secrets. How does one go from being a normal 15 year old with the best family she could ask for to being the unknown daughter of a billionaire? Ask anyone, they would say she is a combination of water and fire. A shimmering river that will flow in whichever way you direct her and also a blubbering stumbling fool that might or might not burn down a building if left unsupervised. In her defense the ground is 'madly in love with her' and danger is a 'clingy ex'. Welcome to the life of Palak; a carefree overthinker, a sensitive rock, a withering laughing fool.
