Jane is a studious hardworking high school senior from a single parent home in a Midwest American town while the world is on the brink of World War II. The book opens with her harmlessly, in a self-amusing manner, experimenting with mind-reading powers on her classmates. On the way home from school, she runs into John, a charming young man who has amorous designs for Jane and not so nice intentions for the future of mankind. A harrowing confrontation between John and the Lady of the Guardians leads to Jane being given the Lady of the Guardians' power. The ensuing journey shows her growth into her powers and learning her role in the resolution of looming war, genocide, and atomic bomb while dealing with the likes of John and shadowy forces lurking in the background.
