Cornelius and the Immortals

Before his mother passed away in a terrible fire, Cornelius grew up listening to the stories she would tell by his bedside, about cities of gold and shadow beasts that could transform into men within a moment's notice. After she passed away, however, nothing has been the same. He has been adopted by the neglectful Pickerings, who seem to have their lives sorted out...until Cornelius has a fit and runs away in Paris, where he encounters a curious circus troupe that has been expecting him for many years. They share with him the grand histories of a land that seem to be similar to the tales his mother told him as a child. Are her stories, just that - stories - or is something far more extraordinary in play?
