She stood in front of the window in her new bedroom, overlooking the busy streets of New York. Her phone ringed with a new message from her mum asking if she's settled in yet. She ignores it and keeps the phone down on the table next to the window.
She looks down on the people walking on the sidewalk even at 12:30 am. This city truly never sleeps, she thought. She found solace in the people five storeys down who were just as awake as she was. She found solace in strangers knowing that they would never be able to harm her in any way.
She turned away when she saw a couple walking hand in hand, laughing together. Such sights always made her question why people even bother with anything when they know that it won't last anyway.
She was smarter. She knew how the world worked.
