"For me, there are three types of people in the world. The ones who are afraid of the dark and adapt by trying the shed light in it, yet never truly see what resides in there. The ones who have seen it, and who have been changed by what they saw in the shadows. And the ones who live in it."
The shadows of the world, which hold killers, rapists and stalkers alike, has touched and destroyed Allison Finch. First, it took a nameless form and watched her every move. Second, it killed anyone that got too close, including her roommate and family. Third, it left the man she loved scared of her, because the shadow followed her everywhere and hurt him. And last, it took her peace of mind. Even when he was finally given a name and locked up, Allison still couldn't feel safe in her old town. So she did what any other scared girl would, moved to the other side of the country and started a new life.
In Havre Montana, the small college of Montana State University offers a secluded place for Allison to continue her studies of the criminal mind. She's determined to find out what drove the boy she had once called a friend to stalk her and kill the ones she loved. And while she purposely tries not to make friends, a few special people slip through the cracks. But just when she was getting comfortable, the prickling feeling of being watched again comes with cold of winter. Did the shadow find her again? Or is it simply her mind playing tricks on her? As signs start to repeat themselves; missing panties and hair ties, notes on the mirror, Allison is torn between believing that her stalker has either escaped from prison or worse.
They never caught him in the first place.
